Enhancing Tasmania’s Cider Trail with a cider mill development at Rosevears
Tasmania’s Cider Trail is to be further enhanced in Northern Tasmania through the development of an agri-tourism venture in the premium wine region of the Tamar Valley.
“The potential for growth in value-add horticulture and agri-tourism in Tasmania is substantial” says Chris Brown, cider-maker with Brady’s Lookout Cider.
“As the only champagne cider producer where visitors will be able to observe the production techniques as well as be hands on at key times of the year, we are investing in this exciting future for agriculture” says Chris.
Brady’s Lookout differs to other Tasmania cider producers as the cider mill devotes 100 per cent focus to the traditional methods of making champagne in France. The dry effervescent champagne style ciders compliment other premium sparkling wine produced in the region. The proposed development will benefit the West Tamar through its alignment with other top ranked experiences of heritage, national parks, premium food and beverages.
Brady’s Lookout Cider was successful in the first grant round under the joint Australian and Tasmanian Government’s Tasmanian Jobs and Investment Fund. The grant, totalling $105,000 will be used to purchase plant and equipment for the custom-built cider mill. The cider mill development will commence at Rosevears during 2016.
Through this agri-tourism development, 1.5 full time jobs will be created in addition to the existing two casual jobs already within this exciting and emerging boutique premium cider business. The proposed 1.5 jobs in cellar door operations and process management will be progressively rolled out once the development is completed.
The growth in cider is offering an alternative market opportunity for existing Tasmanian fruit growers to sell fruit for processing into this alcoholic beverage.
